The paper describes a Smalltalk-based modelling tool for queueing network scenarios and their graphical specification through life cycle diagrams. This software is a component in a wider project exploring the benefits of symbolic languages, object orientation, exploratory programming, graphical interaction and knowledge-based advisory modules for simulation programming. After an introductory discussion of the project’s general goals and motivations, the toolbox’ architecture is described and its use is briefly demonstrated through a simple example. Some comments on the merits of object orientation and desktop-style model development systems, and a brief discussion of future activities in this area conclude the paper.
