This paper provides an insight into the elaboration of strategies for emission reduction at present internationally requested by applying energy-emission models. One of these models, the EC-EFOM-ENV LP-model is presented in detail. Its application is shown in principle as well as to the special situation of countries in transition from a centrally planned to a market economy. The limitations of this approach and further applications on an international level are assessed.
