The authors discuss the considerable importance of deciding whether or not to terminate an ongoing R&D project and explore the main aspects of such a decision. A mathematical model of 3-stages is proposed, which can assist an R&D project manager to achieve R&D project portfolio optimization and decide how many projects should be terminated before entering next stage. Finally, the validity of the proposed method is verified by an example.
