We concretize the concepts of the IT capabilities of client and vendor firms from the resource‐based view. We investigate the effect of IT capabilities of client and vendor firms and their complementarity on IT outsourcing success. The proposed hypotheses were tested using 267 client–vendor matched data. Understanding the complementarity between client and vendor IT capabilities is essential for outsourcing success.
